Carter was born and raised in the Tri-Cities area in Northeast Tennessee, and has lived in Mobile, Alabama, since 2000. He attended Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia as a Venable Scholar and graduated with a B.S. in Political Science. After college, Carter attended Cumberland School of Law at Samford University, where he earned his J.D.
After law school, Carter planted his roots in Mobile, Alabama, where he has practiced law for the past 20-plus years. His practice is concentrated primarily on defending professional liability cases; construction claims; business litigation; employment practices; complex products liability actions, and catastrophic injury and death lawsuits. He also consults and advises clients on business and liability issues, as well as risk assessment, prevention and mitigation.
Over the past 2 decades of his career as a civil defense litigation and trial attorney, Carter has represented a wide-ranging client base – from individuals and small businesses, to regional, national and global companies, many of whom first came to him by way of their liability insurers. He has earned their trust and confidence, and that of the many claims examiners with whom he has worked as panel counsel over the years, forging long-term professional relationships and developing a network of trusted colleagues, contacts and resources along the way.
Carter has enjoyed a successful track record of achieving favorable outcomes for his clients in pre-suit claims and disputes, in negotiating resolutions, and at trial, by combining his experience both inside and outside the courtroom with a blend of key skillsets – specifically, a focus on gaining a deep-rooted knowledge and clear understanding of each client’s unique needs, objectives, core values, and risks, and establishing a chemistry while bringing new ideas and perspectives to the table. Collectively, these hallmark qualities continue to enable Carter to guide clients in high-stakes litigation, decision-making and risk prevention and mitigation.
Carter is a member of the Alabama State Bar (and a member of its Litigation and Employment Law Sections), the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association, and the Mobile Bar Association. He is a frequent speaker at seminars and events for lawyers, businesses and clients on topics including advanced litigation and trial skills, as well as electronic evidence and emerging technologies. (He is also a self-proclaimed legal technology geek.)
Carter and his wife, Jane, live in Mobile with their 3 children (including twins). They enjoy the Gulf Coast, traveling, and spending time outdoors, particularly in the mountains of North Carolina, as well as out West.
